Auckland_BMW Regatta 2009

February is the most beautifull time here in NZ (sun is not too hot and the days are still long) – I am doing 50nm sailing race around waiheke on saturday the 13th 02 2010 and then on the weekend of 26/27/28 of Feb there is another BMW_Regatta (3 day sailing regatta) that I am excited about. Here are some details from the regatta’s website:

The Video in 3 parts – just a short clips from soooooo much film that I had. I will probably cut another piece to show just what a beautifull place that really is.

Hope you enjoy

Back Again

January 19th, 2010

Wow – thousand of years since I posted anything. I had wonderful year – got to enjoy South America and big blue couple of times. What a trip 35 – 50 knots on the nose pretty much all the way from Buenos Aires down to Ushuaia. Rough ride with a lots of excitement, banging and sleepless nights. Run into some trouble with a water pump right around Estrecho de le Maire (The Le Maire Strait) right in the middle of storm of gusting up to 50 – 60 knots of wind. 5- 6 meter swells coming over the bow and tide is against us (pushing the boat back to channel) . Pretty hairy 5 hours while the skipper is being thrown around inside the engine bay replacing the water pump that we got only couple of days before we left Buenos Aires. (thank god) I have been woken up by the storm and put on the helm as Ross Bidmead (who as it turned out later was doing this with broken hand) was pointing me in the right direction. Can’t go north as we could hit rocks or run into standing waves that are created in the channel where Southern, Pacific and Atlantic oceans are meeting. These standing waves are known to be 10 – 12 meters high and once a yacht get in it is just a matter of times before it is being rolled over – and again, and again. Not much of a chance surviving this. Can’t go south as we would get into open waters of southern ocean in the middle of the big-big storm. Not fun being around Cape Horn when it is blowing like this. Have done that my first time around. So we are keeping ourselves positioned, trying to avoid being rolled over by one of the huge waves while Darrel (the skipper is fixing the water pump) in 8 hours we were able to only make 1 mile (wind and tide against us) and this is with the newly fixed engine. On an average day one of the tanks is able to last about 40 hours and do about 200 nautical miles. In the storm in the Le Maire Straits we only were able to get 8hr and in 8 hr we did only 1 nautical mile. Essentially we were steaming full power ahead but 4-5 knots of tide against us together with 50 + knots of wind were pushing us back most of the time until we were able to duck into Beagle Channel and pick up some speed. While in the trouble in the middle of the strait we were talking to Argentinean navy (thank you Juan and Javier) refusing assistance (as this would most likely mean leaving the boat) and giving them position every 15 minutes – in a case we would end up needing rescue or assistance.
Made it safely into Porto Williams and docked next to famous Micalvi Naval Club and Bar. Had few drinks in the bar and spoke to some Chilean Navy officer who was telling us that they got into similar problem ( lost power in the middle of the storm right in the Le Maire Strait while on their 200ft navy vessel. They did not know if they are going to make it as they were being sucked right on the rocks.

I have been with Claire for over a year now and I think it is going really well. We have gotten a chocolate lab that we named Campbell. Cutest little thing. I have moved with Claire and her 8 year old boy Reuben.

We live in a beautiful place – one thing I cannot get used to is wild parrots that always fly away when we are (Campbell and I) walking through the field. I still think it is too cool. Sometimes up to 10 of them just take off and fly couple of meters from you. There are so many little (well – anywhere from .5 to 2hr) bush walks right around our house and having dog makes you get out nearly every day.

Claire just started new job in Air New Zealand and I am happy in my current job as a DBA. Although I might not writte here very often – I regulary update my flikr page. Alan H. – please leave me your email in comments and I will get in touch.

Getting Ready

September 26th, 2009

I am heading out next friday – to Buenos Aires again. Getting on the boat and sailing down to Ushuaia. Some last minute trouble with the boat – but hopefully all will get sorted out. I have not written anything for a while. Claire and I got chocolate lab puppy and we named him Campbell. He is too cute – check out the flickr pages. My last entries were in regards to trip to antarctica in 2009. I left the blog up and it is available here.

Orca Rescue

July 5th, 2008

Its cold and raining here (middle of winter) and I am missing sun, really – really badly. That said, I am having a great day. Howick rescue one (our unit’s boat) has been a duty boat this week. Went out with HR1 today and the weather predictions were pretty grim. Wind 25 – 35 knots average and raising to 35-45 knots with up to 55 knots gusts of wind.

We positioned ourself in Islington Bay (the bay between Rangitoto island and Mototapu Island) and practice maneuvering around buoys, contact and slow speed approach, etc. Then we met up with Alpha – an Auckland Coastguard vessel and chatted for a while. Right when we were heading out a call came in from operations to assist Ingrid Visser the “Orca Rescue Lady” with her team and her visitors infamous explorer’s son and grand son Jean-Michel Cousteau, son Fabien Cousteau in while releasing a 3.4 meter, juvenile female orca whale of about three years old who was reported at 3pm (1300 AEST) on Friday to have been beached at Huia. The orca has been released in Takapuna because of the waters being calmer than waters in Huia. Jean-Michel Cousteau, son Fabien Cousteauare in New Zealand filming a documentary that is tentatively titled Jean-Michel’s Ocean Adventures: Mirror in the Water. It will screen on the National Geographic channel after its release next April.

So we headed out to keep boats away and to assist with the release. I wanted to take some pictures but was at the helm and I think it was more fun to be part of it than to take pictures. There were no private boats since the weather was bad only about 4 coastguard boats and couple of Orca rescue boats. It took a while to get the orca going because she was disoriented and couple of people swam with it for a while. There was quite a crowd gathered on the shore and after about half an hour or so the orca headed out. We were in close contact with Ingrid’s boat and had a chance to talk to her over the radio to liaise. She seemed very nice and was very happy that we were helping them out. She was is great mood since the orca was doing well and everything was going according to plan.

After hour or so we headed back for a crew change. I am happy that I had a chance to get out on the water again – after last week’s rum race. I don’t know what it is but I always like the bad weather, hurricanes and such. It pretty exciting playing with the spinnaker sheet when you know there might be a gust of strong wind and you will have to act really fast to prevent the yacht from heeling too much. Fun, fun, fun… Also it looks like our trip to Thailand will happened after all. I am looking forward seeing Monika, Chris and couple of other people from Bay Area and have (let my hair down – ha…since I have shaved my head last week) for couple of weeks of well – we’ll see of what.

I found some random video of Howick Rescue one on youtube so that you can see my boat in action.

Ok I am heading out to watch a rugby game in Remurera bar (nice part of town) with few friends.
Oh yeah – one more thing. It has been a while since I discovered a song that I can keep playing over and over again. Flobots – handlebars.

June

June 23rd, 2008

Wow…have not written for a while now. Last few months are just a blur, work, work, work and some more work. Really nothing exciting is going on. Its winter here too so there aren’t that many good days to enjoy. I am not sure what I am going to do for my vacation. The trip to asia fell apart – which is sad but it will give me some options to look around. I looked at trips to Antarctica…$13,000 for 30 days. Ok – thank you – but no thank you. Now I am researching the trip to China and Tibet. Will see, maybe I just end up going down to south island or if lucky I will get on a boat to Fiji race later in october or november. I am really excited about doing something again. I feel as if the whole world stopped just for a while but I look back and it has been over a year since I got here. Oh yeah, I have shaved my head…was trying to use normal hair clippers to shorten my hair – but the stupid clip fell off and I went – whoaa and half of my hair was gone down to nothing. So today at work – oh I heard it all. nope no pictures will be available. lol. Too funny. I look like a budha.

Well – I will try to keep this blog going but I have to start taking some more pictures in order for me to get out. Single life is not so easy – have been out with couple of girls but it I am really not into anything serious and want to focus more on my career and travels than spending another half of my life in the wrong relationship. No thank you – been there – done that now its me time! I want to do so many things and there is suddenly so little time – or so it seems. I am loving my life and I am looking forward some adventures. Planing is half the fun.

Thanks for keeping up Otec, Elena, Monika, Bill and Meg and the rest. Love you all and hope you doing great.

Elections are coming up…oh well do we really have a choice?
